Democracies become flaccid without aware, engaged electorates, and the Raging Grannies exist to prevent that.

The organization, which was launched in Victoria British Columbia in 1987, now has 60 gaggles across Canada, the United States, UK, Israel, Japan and Australia.

GRANDMOTHER POWER documents the work of The San Francisco Bay Area Raging Grannies Action League whose members discuss their outrageous outfits, provocative songs, and dreams for the world in which their grandchildren will live.

Updates about the grandmother groups in Grandmother Power

Multi Media:

Documentary: A documentary film is in production about the Raging Granny movement. No surprise that I love its wonderful title: Granny Power. The director, Magnus Isacsson, died in August before completing the film so the Raging Grannies gaggle in his hometown, Montreal, has created a calendar to raise funds so the movie can be finished. The intrepid grans posed wearing nothing but their hats (tastefully and judiciously placed, of course!) Watch the trailer and find out more about ordering a calendar.

March 2012: The Raging Grannies formed an all-woman Viagra Review Board in response to the announcement of an all-male board was named to discuss women’s reproductive rights.

March 31, 2010: The BBC ran a program about the San Francisco Raging Grannies Action League. It was recorded on the afternoon that the Grannies protested against Big Banks.

In the News:

Website: The Raging Grannies Action League’s website includes videos and press coverage of their protests. You may or may not agree with their politics but you have to wish that all political groups espoused their positions with equal humor and creativity!

Raging Grannies Barrie Style: When I was in Barrie Ontario photographing the Canadian chapter for GRANDMOTHER POWER, which features the Stephen Lewis Foundation Grandmothers to Grandmothers campaign, I discovered that some of their members are also Raging Grannies; they recently launched a new website. Take a look!

Order: The award-winning 30-minute documentary about the Raging Grannies Action League that was produced by Pam Walton Productions.

Songs: If you need a song to sing at YOUR protest (or in your shower), you can borrow one from the Raging Grannies. They post their lyrics online for your amusement and use (if you give them credit!).

International Website: If you want to know what the Raging Grannies have been doing internationally, this website tells all.

Gaggles: Want to find a Raging Granny group near you? This map will help you locate one in Canada or the United States.

Behind the Scenes: See a sampling of images that are not in the book, including husbands and grandchildren, interpreters, local people and scenery that caught Paola’s attention while she was interviewing and photographing the Raging Grannies of San Francisco.
