HIV - AIDS - Canada

Two hundred forty groups of Canadian grandmothers are partnering with the Stephen Lewis Foundation to benefit grandmothers in 15 African countries who are raising grandchildren orphaned by AIDS. Some African grandmothers, still grieving for their own children, find themselves with as many as 12 or 15 grandchildren to care for.

The Canadian grandmothers have raised $13.5 million since 2006, and send a steady stream of small cash infusions at the request of the African grandmothers: exactly the right amount, for example, to buy seeds to start a community garden to feed the youngsters---or to purchase a swing set to start an afterschool program. The creative, passionate Canadian grandmothers tell their stories in their own words in GRANDMOTHER POWER!

Six Stephen Lewis Foundation Grandmothers in Ottawa, Canada, raised $80,000 for the Grandmothers to Grandmothers Campaign by climbing Mount Kilimanjaro. What an athletic enterprise for grandmothers! When they returned, they published a coffee table book that tells about their climb. It's titled Kilimanjaro, A Purposeful Journey. Each grandmother wrote a chapter and illustrated it with her own photographs. Proceeds from the book support the Stephen Lewis Foundation Grandmothers to Grandmothers Campaign, of course! Phone or email the Kilimanjaro Grannies to buy a copy of the book:
